Treatment of Cloud Radiative Effects in General Circulation Models

چکیده
For the aerosols, we used the total optical depth derived from Multifilter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer measurements taken by Michalsky and Harrison(a). Values for single scattering albedo and asymmetry factor are taken to be 0.965; 0.680 for UV and visible regions and 0.855; 0.540 for the near-IR region (D’Almeida et al. 1991). Because of a lack of information on the vertical distribution, we assume that all aerosols are located within the boundary layer.

Treatment of Cloud Radiative Effects in General Circulation Models (GCMs): Cloud Overlap Effects on GCM Climate Simulations
We participate in the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program with two objectives: 1) to improve general circulation model (GCM) cloud/radiation treatment with focus on cloud vertical overlapping and layer cloud optical properties, and 2) to study the effects of cloud-radiation climate interaction on GCM climate simulations. This report summarizes the recent findings in sub-grid scale v...
متن کاملCloud - radiative effects on implied oceanic energy transports as simulated by atmospheric general circulation models
This paper summarizes the ocean surface net energy flux simulated by fifteen atmospheric general circulation models constrained by realistically-varying sea surface temperatures and sea ice as part of the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project. In general, the simulated energy fluxes are within the very large observational uncertainties. However, the annual mean oceanic meridional heat trans...
متن کاملEvaluation of Cloud Type Occurrences and Radiative Forcings Simulated by a Cloud Resolving Model Using Observations from Satellite and Cloud Radar
Because of both the various effects clouds exert on the earth-atmospheric system and the cloud feedback, correct representations of clouds in numerical models are critical for accurate climate modeling and weather forecast. Unfortunately, determination of clouds and their radiative feedback processes is still the weakest component of current general circulation models (e.g., Senior and Mitchell...
متن کاملSimple parameterizations of the radiative properties of cloud layers: a review
Current atmospheric general circulation models parameterize cloud-radiation effects through relationships that are based on the assumption that a model grid is partly clear and the remaining area is filled with a homogeneous cloud layer. The optical properties of this homogeneous layer are related to cloud microphysical quantities such as the liquid water path and effective drop radius which in...
متن کاملCloud Types Simulated by the NCEP GFS Model
Clouds and their interactions with radiation is recognized by the most recent IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; 2001) report as the greatest uncertainty in future projections of climate, and, despite the considerable improvement of the physical realism of cloud representation in general circulation models, representation of clouds and their feedbacks is still the weakest componen...
متن کاملConstraining the first aerosol indirect radiative forcing in the LMDZ GCM using POLDER and MODIS satellite data
[1] The indirect effects of anthropogenic aerosols are expected to cause a significant radiative forcing of the Earth’s climate whose magnitude, however, is still uncertain. Most climate models use parameterizations for the aerosol indirect effects based on so-called ‘‘empirical relationships’’ which link the cloud droplet number concentration to the aerosol concentration. New satellite dataset...
